Designing My Own Website - Part 2

Writing Content

Then came the fun part.  Learning how to write content for my website and where to put these keywords I had discovered.  Keywords must be placed strategically within the websites content.  This enables the search engines to scan the content to find the keywords that are related to the website. I learned where the ideal placement of the keywords and keyword phrases were to go to enable the search engines to recognize the website.

The key to writing text is not to make sure keywords are placed correctly, which is very important, but to make sure the content is ‘talking’ to the person reading the website. Direct the content to them.  Use the word ‘You.’  Speak their language.

I have always found it an excellent idea to have someone, or several people read what I have written and make comments.  Not only did I query my family but Kathy, my coach and mentor, was such a wonderful help to me.  She had written so many web pages for real estate agents when she was a virtual assistant, she knew how to write for the internet and made suggestions to get me headed in the right direction.

The amazing thing about the internet and learning something new like designing your website, is how much information is out there for your use.  People are always willing to help you figure out a problem.  Most of this information can be found, free of charge.

Adding Photographs

Once the content was written, I had to start thinking of photographs to include on the website.  People love pictures and a website needs as many as you deem necessary, but not too many.  There were
numerous places to find photographs.  I could use my own, which I did for many photographs.  Other avenues were www.istockphoto.com and www.flickr.com.  There are many other websites where photographs can be obtained, but make sure they are obtained legally.

Establishing Pages

There were many other things I needed to learn for SEO, writing, and constructing my web pages.  I feel as though I learn something new, if not daily, then weekly.  There were several pages needed for my website.  Of course the Home Page which is the introduction to my business.  FAQ (frequently asked questions) is self-explanatory.  I want people to know what I provide and how much I charge so there is my Services and Rates page.  There must be a Contact Page for anyone interested in contacting you and I’ve included a Portfolio page as well.  A website needs to be continually updated and revised or your website will not be attractive to the search engines.  A terrific section to include in your website is a blog.  But be warned, you need to consistently update your blog for it to be effective.
