How to Set Up Your Blog

I attended a seminar this past Friday entitled, Blogging and Social Media Marketing, that was hosted by the Colorado Association of Mortgage Brokers. The attendees were mostly real estate agents and mortgage brokers: the main speaker was Jason Berman of “The J. Berman Group.”

We never did get to the Social Media Marketing part of this seminar because the attendees were primarily interested in how to get started with a blog and how to start blogging. Jason recommended using WordPress.com. I understood his reasoning behind this. WordPress.com is fairly easy to setup and start using right away. I have a few clients that want to start a blog and would prefer to use their logo or header. It’s a personal preference and one that is not available on WordPress.com. However, you can incorporate your logo or header on a WordPress.org blog.

There were many questions asked by the attendees, many of them very good questions from beginner bloggers. One that stuck in my head was, “What is a Widget?”

Jason took his time and answered all the questions in an easy, relaxed fashion. I wanted to stand up and announce, “You guys really need a good virtual assistant to do the setup and blogging for you.” As I am not that outgoing, I did not attempt this feat.

I asked myself several questions regarding these attendees:

  • At the end of this seminar, will any of them actually start a blog?
  • If any of these people want to start a blog, will they take Jason’s advice on WordPress.com?
  • Will they be disappointed as to the capabilities of WordPress.com?
  • Would they rather have the option of starting with WordPress.org so they can use their own custom logo or header?
  • Do they understand what needs to be done to maintain a blog?
  • Will they continue to update their blogs at a minimum of once a week?

The questions could go on and on.  But suffice it to say, most of those attendees could use a very good virtual assistant.

If you have any questions about setting up a blog, or would like a virtual assistant to set up your blog so you don’t need to worry about learning how to do it, please give me a call.
