Exploring the Southwest with HDR Photography
This Memorial Day weekend we were able to take a couple of extra days and drive down to Kanab, Utah to visit our daughter. She works for the North Kaibab National Forest Service as an archaeologist doing a lot of survey work. Her office is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and surrounding area. She has an amazing office!
We went down last year over the 4th of July weekend and took so many photographs of the Grand Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs and various other areas.
This year we spent most of our time around Kanab, Utah, Bryce Canyon, and ventured into Arizona to go to Pipe Springs.
One of my hobbies and loves is photography and taking HDR (High Dynamic Range) photographs. My Canon 10D has an automatic setting but will only take three (3) photographs in succession, one at normal exposure, one under exposed and one over exposed. These last two can be set at whatever degree of variance you prefer.
However, I like to do a series of 7 exposures, the first being at normal exposure, three (3) under exposed at half step intervals and three (3) over exposed at half step intervals. Another key to my photographs is taking my photos in RAW format . Basically a RAW image is the digital equivalent to the film negative. I feel I get much better definition to my photographs using RAW format.
You need software to process these photographs, I use Photomatix Pro for Macintosh. It’s like being in a dark room again. I can sit here for hours working on HDR photography!
These first four (4) shots were taken at Pahreah an old movie set and ghost town located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
